This training for the Engine Watchkeeping Officer / Chief Engineer 8000 kW aims to prepare for the profession of engineering officer aboard commercial ships.It takes place over three years, divided into six semesters at the Saint-Malo site.It trains merchant marine navigating officers who will, in the engine department:

  • have responsibilities in the operation of propulsion installations,
  • have responsibilities in the operation of electrical production,
  • have responsibilities in the operation of all technical installations of a ship,
  • undertake actions to prevent, or even combat, pollution.

The Saint-Malo site has specific educational equipment, such as various engine simulators, ship change simulators, hydraulic, electrotechnical, automation, programming, machining, welding workshops, and ship engine dismantling rooms.Upon completion of this training, the diplomas obtained are:

  • Engine Watchkeeping Officer, Chief Engineer 8000kW, and ETO (Electronic Technical Officer)
  • Recognition at the bachelor’s degree level

The teaching consists of lectures, directed work, practical work, and a period of embarkation (School-in-ship) where students will be placed in a situation aboard a partner company’s ship.Mandatory maritime training is integrated into the curriculum: medical training, survival at sea, firefighting, management, gas and oil certifications, for example.A medical fitness certificate for navigation will be required, see “Additional Information” at the bottom of the page)

Career prospects

Professional opportunities:

Merchant marine officers are destined to work on commercial ships, some with international crews, across all oceans and seas of the world, to transport goods, convey passengers, or carry out specific tasks such as laying cables or supporting offshore installations.

This training prepares for the profession of engineering officer and then chief engineer aboard commercial ships.

The sectors of activity are numerous on different types of ships:

  • Cargo ships such as container ships, oil tankers, gas carriers, roll-on/roll-off ships, bulk carriers…
  • Passenger ships such as ferries, cruise ships, private yachts…
  • Service and maritime works ships such as cable layers, tugs, support vessels for platforms…
  • Oceanographic research vessels.
  • Deep-sea fishing

Further studies:

“Chief Engineer 8000 kW” graduates can, after a minimum period of sea service (navigation), join the unlimited chief engineer curriculum, allowing them to navigate without power restriction.

Obtaining a bachelor’s degree allows for further studies in higher education or to sit for administrative competitions.

There is also the possibility to apply for the Maritime Engineering training conducted at the Nantes site

Admission conditions

  • Registration on parcoursup.fr for high school students and graduates without another diploma.
  • Registration on supmaritime.fr for candidates with qualifications higher than two years post-high school or in professional retraining, as well as for foreign candidates.

Medical Fitness

ENSM students must be fit to practice the seafaring profession. A medical fitness certificate for navigation, issued by a maritime doctor, is required to enroll in the training in September.

To find out if you meet the admission criteria for navigation, consult your primary care physician now for an initial medical opinion.

Only the opinion of the maritime health service can issue the medical fitness certificate required to start these training programs.

Be aware of appointment scheduling times; do not hesitate to approach certified centers located along the entire coastline (mainland and overseas territories).

Additional Costs

Travel and accommodation expenses should be anticipated for certifying internships requiring travel within France. ENSM may contribute to covering part of these costs through its Foundation
