ENSM and Erasmus+

ERASMUS Strategy Statement

French Maritime Academy is a public scientific, cultural and professional institution (EPSCP), established as a ‘grand établissement’. The ENSM was established on 1 October 2010, pursuant to Decree No. 2010-1129 of 28 September 2010, as amended by Decree No. 2019-200 of 15 March 2019. It has four campuses: Le Havre, Saint-Malo, Nantes and Marseille.

The ENSM, which falls under the supervision of the State Secretariat for the Sea, trains merchant navy officers and marine engineers. The school offers initial, vocational and continuing education programmes, is ISO 9001-2015 certified and complies with Decree No. 2015-790 of 30 June 2015 on the quality of continuing vocational training programmes.

The seafaring courses (merchant navy officer) are either single-discipline (deck or engine – the latter being awarded a bachelor’s degree under Decree No. 2017-641 of 26 April 2017) or multi-disciplinary (deck and engine). For the combined course, in addition to the higher education diploma in merchant shipping, an engineering degree, accredited by Opinion No. 2015/10-04 of the Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur (CTI) and corresponding to Master’s level, is awarded by the ENSM.

The institution also offers engineering courses in maritime engineering (EcoShip Manager and Offshore Maintenance Manager), accredited under the same CTI decision No. 2015/10-04.

European projects

Under the Erasmus+ programme, numerous European research projects are being carried out between ENSM and its partner institutions.

The various ERASMUS+ activities that the institution intends to implement (section 1.1) are designed to meet the objectives of Strategic Priority No. 2 of the COP, and in particular to:

  • Encourage our students to join crews on ships flying all flags,
  • Encourage mobility for marine engineering students to a higher education institution to undertake a year of study abroad or an internship,
  • Strengthen the learning of foreign languages, particularly English (the working language on board ships),
  • Offer dual degrees,
  • Develop intercultural skills, which are particularly relevant within ship crews,
  • Provide an opportunity for students specialising in seafaring, in particular, to undertake a year of study abroad,
  • Organise teacher exchanges, thereby improving English language proficiency (outgoing mobility), enabling the discovery of other practices (outgoing and incoming mobility), and the discovery of new cultures and teaching approaches (incoming and outgoing mobility) for the benefit of ENSM students and other teaching staff,
  • Organise exchanges for administrative staff, thereby enabling them to improve their English language skills (outgoing mobility), discover other working practices (outgoing and incoming mobility), and discover new cultures and teaching approaches (incoming and outgoing mobility)
  • Strengthen existing academic partnerships and develop new ones, thereby increasing the school’s visibility and appeal,
Expand the range of European study programmes (through joint programmes with other partners),
    Pool teaching resources and tools.

Under the ERASMUS+ Charter, mobility schemes will therefore apply to:

  • Students on all courses (officer training, multi-disciplinary marine engineering if other academies validate this course, marine engineering),
  • Teachers delivering instruction in all fields, in both initial and continuing education,
  • Teachers involved in projects and research activities on shared themes,
  • Regarding work placements, all students will be covered by the ERASMUS+ programme, as officer cadets must undertake placements on board ships, whilst marine engineering students must complete a six-month placement in a company,
  • Administrative staff for the exchange of best practices.
  • The choice of partnerships with non-maritime higher education institutions is guided by several criteria, the main ones being:
Geographical proximity for French partners, in the case of courses developed jointly with, for example, the universities of Le Havre and Nantes, the engineering schools ENSTA Paris, Centrale Nantes and the École Navale,
  • In France, Europe and internationally, consistency between the courses offered at ENSM and the three main areas of research developed within the institution.

European and international partners will be selected primarily from among maritime institutions and academies in the programme’s member or partner countries.

Mobility

Under the Erasmus+ Charter, incoming and outgoing mobility schemes with other institutions may involve:

  • Students on the selected courses,
  • Lecturers teaching across all disciplines, in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes,
  • Lecturers involved in teaching or research projects on shared themes,
  • Administrative staff.

Internships abroad

By including work placements abroad within its scope, Erasmus+ enables all ENSM students to benefit from the programme.

By joining the ERASMUS+ programme, the school’s objectives are

  • Strengthening foreign language learning and developing intercultural skills, teacher exchanges,
  • Student exchanges during training,
  • Sharing and making available each partner’s expertise for teaching and research,
  • Joint participation in calls for proposals: training or research programmes,
  • Pooling of teaching resources and tools,
  • Awarding of dual degrees,
  • Professional and personal development of teachers.
