Advanced training for vessels operating in polar waters

PUBLIC CONCERNED

All masters, chief mates and officers in charge of the deck watch on board ships operating in polar waters.

PREREQUISITES

  • Hold the certificate or basic training certificate for vessels operating in polar waters.
  • Hold a seafarer’s medical certificate stating the seaworthiness of less than 12 months.

OBJECTIVES

– To contribute to the safe operation of vessels operating in polar waters.
– To monitor and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
– To observe safe working practices and intervene in emergency situations.
– Ensure compliance with pollution prevention regulations and prevent risks to the environment.

34 hours (from Day-1 1.30pm to Day-5 12.30pm)

PROGRAMME

Theoretical training :
– Planning a voyage and conducting a voyage in polar waters
– Equipment limitations
– Operating and manoeuvring the ship in ice
– Safety of the ship’s crew and passengers

Practical training :
– Establishing a safe route and planning the crossing to avoid ice
– Altering the route from the planned crossing due to ice conditions
– Conditions required for safe entry into areas of ice or open water
– Methods of preventing a ship from becoming trapped in ice and of freeing a trapped ship Methods of manoeuvring a ship in different ice concentrations and ice cover Procedures for mooring and sailing in ice-covered waters
– Procedures for anchoring in ice

These certificates are valid for 12 months, during which time you can use the appropriate CERFA form to renew your certificates with Maritime Affairs.
