Ship’s Captain SMTDR
Minimum qualification: Chief Engineer 3000 certificate and valid certificates as required
Management responsibilities: the operation and maintenance of equipment and tools on board, the upkeep of vessels and their fittings; repairs shall be carried out in accordance with current procedures and, where necessary, the instructions of the Chief Engineer; uses the CMMS (‘Sémaphore’)
The main tasks falling within the normal remit of chief engineers include (non-exhaustive list):
– monitoring the maintenance and proper upkeep of vessels, including their ancillary systems, and carrying out basic work (mechanical, electrical, boilermaking, navigation equipment, etc.) necessary to maintain service, safety and the general good condition of the vessel.
– ordering fuel, requesting quotations for spare parts, small equipment and consumables relating to the vessels and operational facilities, with the assistance of the crew;
– assisting in monitoring the condition of mooring facilities, passenger shelters, premises and any other structures forming part of the waterway infrastructure;
– Reporting any anomalies encountered (technical report);
– Assisting in the preparation and conduct of safety drills;
– Carrying out repairs. If, due to the severity or technical nature of the fault, the assistance of an external workshop is required, the Chief Engineer shall request their intervention.
THE FLEET
The Syndicat Mixte des Traversées du Delta du Rhône (SMTDR), a public local cooperation body (Department 13 and Arles Town Council), organises, operates and funds a public ferry transport service (ROPAX vessels under the administration of AFFMARS/ENIM, subject to the ISM Code), to ensure territorial continuity between the RD36 and RD35, by crossing the Rhône (400 m) between SALIN DE GIRAUD (13129 ARLES, PACA region) and PORT SAINT LOUIS
The vessels
Classified as a ro-ro passenger vessel (ferry type): 196 passengers; 4 trucks + 24 cars; Crew: 1 captain, 1 chief engineer, 2 deckhands, LOA: 57 m, GT: 498, Engines: 2 x UD25 V12 M4 Wartsila 570 kW; Propulsion: 2 x 5-bladed ‘VOITH’ VSP16 propellers; Classed BV, Engine ‘AUT’. Docking is carried out by mooring to jetties, and loading/unloading operations are carried out 24 hours a day using gangways on docks that adjust to the height of the Rhône and so-called WARREN gangways mounted on floating pontoons. Average annual activity on the route: 50,000 crossings, 850,000 passengers.
Job details:
Fixed-term contract to start as soon as possible (duration to be agreed with the candidate); Shift pattern: 12 days’ work followed by 12 days’ accrued rest leave (or 16/16); 6-hour shifts followed by rest periods onshore, with accommodation in a single room (on-site accommodation with kitchen, bathroom, etc.); Shift sequence: EVENING (19:00–02:00) – AFTERNOON (14:00–19:00) – DAY (10:00–14:00) – MORNING (4am–10am) and so on throughout the fishing season; Approximate net salary of €4,200/month (health insurance contribution, end-of-year bonus and other benefits); Category 12 ENIM; Collective agreement: GASPE; Exceptional natural environment (Rhône Delta with miles of unspoilt beaches… La Camargue Regional Park). You must be an experienced mechanic (although on-board maintenance does not exceed Level 3: minor mechanical repairs, fault identification and diagnosis, adjustments). You must be adaptable and able to work in a team, with a sense of responsibility and commitment to public service.
