Second Captain

SUDILES is looking for a Second Captain (M/F) to start on December 1, 2025 (one-month fixed-term contract, ENIM). Applications must be submitted today.

MISSION:

The Second Captain is the head of the deck department.
In the event of the Captain’s incapacity, he or she takes command of the ship.
He ensures discipline and the application of safety procedures on the ship and during port calls.
His main duties are:
 Steering the ship,
 Managing commercial operations on board and during port calls,
 Managing safety,
 Managing and planning ship maintenance: deck department,
 Managing the deck crew.

STEERING THE SHIP:

 He keeps watch on the bridge and monitors routes in accordance with the Route Manual and the Captain’s standing orders in the lagoon, in reduced visibility and at night, and remains on watch on the bridge.
 He reports the draft to the Captain before departure.
 Assists the Captain during docking and departure maneuvers and is responsible for bow maneuvers,
 Reports all relevant information to the Captain.

MANAGEMENT OF COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS ON BOARD AND IN PORT:

 Responsible for the proper application of commercial procedures,
 Responsible for the registration, boarding, and disembarkation of passengers, their baggage, and cargo, as well as the secure storage of unclaimed baggage,
 Checks the accuracy of passenger and cargo manifests and the billing of excess baggage,
 Responsible for loading, checking cargo markings, the presence of IMDG, and verifying stowage and lashing in the garage,
 Receives and invoices cargo during stopovers at Ile des Pins,
 Ensures passenger safety by checking that all access points to the gangway are properly closed,
 Makes rounds at sea, ensures the quality of passenger assistance provided by the crew, ensures that crew members are at their stations, checks the cleanliness of the lounges,
 Participates in sales meetings,
 Reports any relevant information to the sales manager.

SECURITY MANAGEMENT:

 Responsible for implementing the Security Management System in their department and during stopovers.
 Fully familiar with all company SMS procedures relevant to their area of activity and signs off on manuals when they are updated.
 Contributes to the proper use of the Semaphore software on board,
 Contributes to the drafting, implementation, and enforcement of company procedures in their department,
 Participates in safety drills, drafts reports, and enters them into Semaphore after the captain has signed them,
 Member of the ship’s safety committee (safety meeting)
 Conducts a handover review with the first mate embarking or disembarking, and ensures the traceability within Semaphore of actions, progress, and information to be transmitted.
 Reports to the captain any relevant information related to safety management.

SHIP MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING: DECK DEPARTMENT:

 Responsible for implementing the Safety Management System in their department and during stopovers.
 Fully familiar with all company SMS procedures relevant to their area of activity and signs off on manuals when they are updated.
 Contributes to the proper use of the Semaphore software on board,
 Contributes to the drafting, implementation, and enforcement of company procedures in his/her department,
 Participates in safety drills, drafts reports, and enters them into Semaphore after signature by the captain,
 Member of the ship’s safety committee (safety meeting)
 Conducts a handover review with the first mate embarking or disembarking, and ensures the traceability within Semaphore of actions, progress, and information to be transmitted.
 Reports to the captain any relevant information related to safety management.

SHIP MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING: DECK DEPARTMENT:

 Participates in inspections, visits, and checks by the authorities, ensures that comments and observations are properly followed up on: deck department.
 Responsible for managing contractors and subcontractors in the deck department, drafting work permits and registering them.
 Responsible for consumables stocks: paint and equipment, cleaning and hygiene products, PPE, deck tools,
 Ensures that preventive and corrective maintenance operations are planned, carried out, and recorded via semaphore: deck service, safety.
 Draws up the list of deck work for technical shutdowns,
 Participates in technical shutdowns and refits of the ship,
 Participates in technical inspections of the ship,
 Ensures cleanliness and hygiene on board in all areas: passenger and crew,
 Reports to the Captain and the Ship Engineer any information relevant to the technical management of the ship.

DECK CREW MANAGEMENT:

 Responsible for issuing the daily crew roster, displaying it on the bridge and in the officers’ mess, and sending it by email to the shipowner,
 Supervises the integration of new crew members in accordance with procedures,
 Participates in the annual evaluations of the deck crew,
 Supervises his teams in the management of working hours.
 Ensures discipline, hygiene, and safety on board the ship.
 Reports to the Captain any information relevant to crew management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Second Captain’s Certificate for ships of 3,000 GT or more,
 Medical fitness for navigation and bridge watchkeeping,
 ECDIS training certificate,
 General Radio Operator’s Certificate,
 Medical III,
 Passenger Ship Training Certificate,
 CFBS, CAEERS, CQALI.
