Conference: ‘Navigation and time measurement from antiquity to the present day’

The École Nationale Supérieure Maritime (ENSM) is pleased to invite you to a lecture entitled ‘Navigation and time measurement from antiquity to the present day’ by Laurent Pagani, Astrophysicist, Paris Observatory, LUX – Laboratory for the Study of the Universe and Extreme Phenomena.

In order to navigate far from the coast, it is necessary to be able to determine one’s position. Before the advent of GPS, this posed a problem, the first difficulty being the ability to measure time accurately. We will discuss navigation in terms of the development of time-measuring instruments, the involvement of astronomy in this measurement, and the feats achieved by our ancestors who were on the Moon… but for good reasons! We will also see why the day does not always last 24 hours.
