Conference: ‘Modern Time/Frequency Metrology, or How Atomic Frequencies Rule the World’

The École Nationale Supérieure Maritime (ENSM) is pleased to invite you to a lecture entitled ‘Modern Time/Frequency Metrology, or How Atomic Frequencies Rule the World’ by François Taris, Astrophysicist, Paris Observatory, SYRTE – Time-Space Reference Systems.

The 20th century was a century of transition for time measurement, which moved from the field of astronomy to that of physics. We moved from mechanical devices, still linked to astronomical observation, to devices that were independent of astronomy and involved the very structure of matter.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the precision of time measurement is such that clocks are capable of keeping time to within a few seconds over the age of the universe.
During this conference, we will present modern time/frequency metrology, including atomic clocks and time scales, time transfer and positioning methods, as well as some applications of time measurement in astrophysics, physics and geodesy.
