Lecture entitled ‘Sailor! Who are you?’ followed by a tour of CESAME

To mark the Route du Rhum, the ENSM’s Centre for Survival and Sea Rescue Training is opening its doors for a talk entitled “Sailor! Who are you?” and a guided tour!

The lecture will provide an overview of seafarers, exploring various aspects: history, common misconceptions, the lives of sea dogs – but ultimately, what image does the general public have of a ‘seafarer’? How does one become one? And how does this profession fit into everyday life?

The ENSM’s Centre for Survival and Sea Rescue Training (CESAME) is an educational facility providing training in the areas of abandoning ship, survival at sea, rescue and firefighting in accordance with the STCW Convention.

Located in the harbours of Saint-Malo, it is equipped with a platform enabling the launching of several lifeboats, including a free-fall lifeboat and a fire simulator. It uses its expertise to train ENSM cadets and professional seafarers. CESAME is accredited to deliver specific safety-related training courses in accordance with the IMO’s International STCW Convention (CAEERS, CAECSR, TIS, FBLI and CQALI courses).

Fire-fighting training enables participants to familiarise themselves with the use of self-contained breathing apparatus, to develop skills in navigating smoke-filled environments and in extinguishing fires on board ships, at both operational and command levels.

Training courses in rescue and survival at sea enable participants to acquire the skills required to manage an emergency evacuation of a vessel and to use individual and collective rescue equipment.
CESAME also has facilities for delivering training on safety when working at height and risk management in confined spaces.

As part of its continuing professional development programme, CESAME welcomes seafarers from the merchant navy, the fishing industry and the recreational boating sector.
