Nicolas Cité, a lecturer in Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Automation and a researcher at the ENSM Le Havre campus, shares his career journey:

“➡️Why did you join ENSM?
🖋️I joined ENSM for several reasons. Firstly, I wanted to be closer to Le Havre, where I live. I felt I had done everything I could in my previous role and was looking for new challenges. ENSM also represented a real opportunity for me to get involved in research activities, which was in line with my aspirations. Joining this institution was also a way to challenge myself and discover a new environment: the maritime sector.

➡️What were you doing before?
🖋️I taught for 12 years in the Electrical Engineering department at the engineering school. I taught on both the foundation year and the engineering degree programmes. My teaching focused mainly on control systems, electrical engineering and power electronics. The students I taught were very similar to those on the school’s Master’s programme.

➡️What advice would you give to a teacher who is hesitant about joining ENSM?
🖋️The working environment is pleasant, although the first few years do require a significant personal commitment. The school has put in place measures to help new staff settle in, notably by reducing the teaching load in the first year, which allows them to prepare their lessons under favourable conditions.

New lecturers can rely on the support of an educational engineer, Frédéric Dupont, who helps them develop and adapt their teaching practices. A degree of freedom is allowed in the choice of teaching methods, whilst adhering to the STCW framework.

The school encourages the ‘maritimisation’ of non-seafaring teachers, particularly through opportunities to go on board ships, which is a real asset for gaining a better understanding of the maritime environment.

➡️Any final thoughts?
🖋️I’d say that joining the ENSM is, above all, about daring to step out of your comfort zone to discover a new, demanding and exciting environment: the maritime world. It’s an enriching experience, both personally and professionally.

“This is an opportunity to be part of a dynamic research environment and to help advance knowledge in this field. Ultimately, it’s a way to keep learning whilst passing on your knowledge.”

ENSM is recruiting lecturers for its campuses in Le Havre, Saint-Malo, Nantes and Marseille.
