Job Description
DESGAGNÉS MARINE PETRO INC. is recruiting for the position of Second Engineer for its fleet of tankers, to operate on the Great Lakes, in Eastern Canada and in the Canadian Arctic.
Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer is responsible for planning and supervising preventive maintenance and repair work on the vessel’s machinery, equipment and systems. Their specific responsibilities include the preventive maintenance and servicing of the main engine and propulsion system, and the supervision of auxiliary machinery maintenance.
The second engineer is responsible for:
• The maintenance and repair of the main machinery (propulsion engines) and auxiliary equipment (generators, compressors, pumps, etc.).
• Assisting with the operation of the pumping systems and valves used during the loading and unloading of liquid cargo (oil, gas, etc.).
• Managing stocks of fuel and lubricants, as well as monitoring their consumption.
• Keeping accurate records of machinery operations, inspections, fuel consumption and repairs carried out.
• Ensuring that all safety equipment and fire-fighting systems are functioning correctly, in particular by carrying out regular inspections and safety drills.
• Supervising and training crew members under their responsibility, such as assistant engineers, engine room ratings and cadets.
Unionised post: Yes
Variable (40 hours per week). This is an on-board post, so hours will vary according to the vessel’s operational requirements. For tankers, the fleet operates year-round on a 5-weeks-at-sea/5-weeks-ashore rota. Mechanical officers are therefore
expected to work approximately 180 days spread over the year.

Level of education
A degree in marine mechanics or maritime engineering leading to the qualifications required to become a mechanical officer under the STCW Convention.
College studies (technical), College Diploma in Marine Mechanics.
Level of experience
Intermediate (2–9 years); Note: 2 years’ experience as a mechanical officer and a minimum of 6 months’ experience as a second engineer.
