Job Description

DESGAGNÉS MARINE CARGO INC. is recruiting for the position of Chief Officer for its fleet of cargo vessels, to operate in Eastern Canada and/or the Canadian Arctic.

The Chief Officer reports directly to the Captain. He is responsible, amongst other things, for operations relating to the ship’s cargo (loading/unloading) as well as
the ship’s ballasting and deballasting operations (stability).

Unionised role: Yes

Variable (40 hours per week). This is an on-board role, so working hours will vary according to the vessel’s operational requirements. For cargo ships, the season runs from June to November (5 months of continuous operation).

Languages

French: Intermediate
English: Intermediate

Education

Higher education in maritime navigation (merchant navy), accompanied by the required STCW certificates and the First Officer’s certificate.

College studies (technical), College Diploma in Navigation

Level of experience

Intermediate (2–9 years), 1 year’s experience as Chief Officer and 2 years’ experience as First Officer on board a cargo ship.
