Job Description

DESGAGNÉS MARINE CARGO is recruiting for the position of Second Engineer for its fleet of cargo ships, to operate in Eastern Canada and/or the Canadian Arctic.

Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning and supervising preventive maintenance and repair work on the vessel’s machinery, equipment and systems. Their specific responsibilities include the preventive maintenance and servicing of the main engine and propulsion system, and the supervision of auxiliary machinery maintenance.

Unionised position: Yes

Variable (40 hours per week). This is an on-board role, so working hours will vary according to the vessel’s operational requirements. For cargo ships, the season runs from June to November (5 months of continuous operation). For tankers, the fleet operates year-round on a 5-weeks-at-sea/5-weeks-ashore rota. Engineer officers are therefore required to work approximately 180 days spread over the year.

Skills and training

•Certificates/Endorsements: STCW III/2 regulations
•Second Class Engineer Officer’s Certificate of Competency for motor vessels, or a higher-grade certificate (STCW)
•Valid maritime medical certificate
•Certificate of Competency in Emergency Training at Sea (STCW)
•Certificate of Competency in Advanced First Aid at Sea (STCW)

Langues

Français : Intermédiaire
Anglais : Intermédiaire, maîtrise de la langue anglaise (Langue de travail)

Niveau d’études

Formation supérieure en mécanique marine (marine marchande) accompagnée des certifications STCW requises pour exercer les fonctions de deuxième mécanicien.

Diplôme d’études collégiales techniques, Précisions sur les formations : Mécanique marine

Niveau d’expérience

Intermédiaire (2-9 ans), Précision : 6 mois d’expérience comme 3e mécanicien et 24 mois d’expérience à titre de mécanicien à bord de navires pétrolier ou cargo.
