CMES West-Med: successful training of instructors on simulators

The CMES West-Med project, >, Common Maritime Education Standards in the West Mediterranean, aims to establish a sustainable network of maritime academies, public authorities and private maritime transport stakeholders in the Mediterranean. The network is based on the commitment to adopt a common methodology to develop new training courses for seafarers.

The school is associated with two partners who are training centres: the Italian FAIMM “Fondazione Accademia Italiana della Marina Mercantile” and the IMFMM “Institut Méditerranéen de Formation aux Métiers Maritimes” from Tunisia. The project started on 1 January 2019 and runs until June 2021.

The instructor-evaluator training on simulators, developed by the French Maritime Academy (ENSM), was carried out by Caroline PONS, a teacher at the Marseille site.

Among the themes around which the CMES West-Med project, project is structured, one of them concerns the testing of the methodology developed through three pilot courses:

  • Maritime cybersecurity through simulators (by FAIMM)
  • New training on port logistics (by IMFMM)
  • Training of instructors – evaluators on simulators

This course is aimed at instructors/evaluators who provide initial or continuous training on simulators within a maritime vocational training establishment. It aims to develop and create specific skills related to training or assessment on simulators, from a pedagogical, methodological or behavioural point of view.

In the health situation of 2020, the project had to adapt by filming the training on the French Maritime Academy (ENSM) site in Marseille, with Caroline Pons and the trainees, to be evaluated at a distance.

The five trainees, with varied profiles, underlined the importance of such training. They appreciated the various exercises on simulators. This test course made it possible to check the coherence and relevance of the course and to suggest certain areas for improvement.

The results are positive and the French Maritime Academy (ENSM) will soon offer this course in its catalogue of offers.
