Time at Sea
Within the engineer-level programme and the deck and engine vocational training programmes, the ENSM’s students have to carry out cadetships during their training at the academy.
They can sail under French, RIF or foreign flags.
The cadetships conditions according to Armateurs de France are mentioned in the ENSM-Armateurs de France convention.
The other shipowners are requested to sign a convention with the ENSM.

Cadets’ duties and rights
The cadet signs on within the framework of a training convention. During their time onboard they remain in contact with the academy. They are not considered as employees but they must respect the ship’s schedules and discipline. Their activity onboard has a direct link with their onboard training: discovery of the sector, of the vessel, etc…
As far as training contracts are concerned, the cadet officer holder of such a contract has the same status as an employee. They benefit from the whole of the provisions applicable to employees, if they aren’t incompatible with the training course requirements.
Throughout their time onboard, the cadet will have to fill out their onboard training booklet and get the acquisition of their expected competences recorded in order to get their certificate.
Refer to the statutory texts dealing with cadetships : articles L.6325-1 and following articles of the labour code.
Meeting ENSM’s students
The students are in charge of finding cadetships. In order to meet companies and make it easier for students to find cadetships, the ENSM organizes on each campus Companies-Students Meeting Days.

Suggesting a final year thesis subject
In order to graduate with the Higher Studies Diploma of the Merchant Navy (DESMM), the students have to write a thesis, and can choose a subject suggested by the ENSM. Thus, the actors of the maritime and para-maritime sectors can suggest a subject which will be dealt with by a cadet officer.
