Captains, Chief Officers and Officers in charge of Bridge watchkeeping onboard vessels operated in polar regions.

required Background

Persons holding a Captain or Chief Officer certificate for ships with a Gross Tonnage equal or superior to 500 UMS.

Objectives

– Contribute to the operational safety of vessels operated in polar regions
–Monitor and ensure compliance to legal requirements
–Implement safe occupational practices, take actions in emergency situations
–Ensure compliance to requirements related to the prevention of pollution and prevent risks for the environment

Duration

34 hours (from Day 1-1.30 pm to Day 5-12.30 pm)

–Ship performance in ice conditions and low air temperatures
–Operation and manoeuvring ability of the ship in ice conditions
–Basic requirement in the statutory framework

–Pollution prevention and risks for the environment
Practical training:
–Ice types and concentrations
–Tides and currents in ice conditions
–Wind and currents impact on ice
–Safe speed in ice and iceberg conditions
–Safety measures while underway in ice conditions
